Ciò avviene in conseguenza del fatto che nella psicologia sociale la prospettiva individualistica poggia oltre che su una forte tradizione culturale (l'evoluzionismo darwiniano, mediato da Herbert Spencer, a cui lo stesso McDougall - al pari di altri - si richiama), su una sentitissima esigenza di incrementare la scientificità degli assunti teorici, distaccandosi del tutto dalla filosofia sociale ed adottando sistematicamente il metodo sperimentale; la conseguenza è quella di orientarsi verso paradigmi di analisi tanto più 'ristretti' quanto più verificabili.
Questa propensione pragmatica e funzionalista è alimentata nella psicologia sociale americana dalla convergenza tra individualismo e comportamentismo e dalla stretta adesione alla sperimentazione di laboratorio (che è alla base dell'approccio comportamentista). Se ciò consentì alla psicologia sociale di acquisire identità disciplinare d'altra parte portò, negli Stati Uniti più che altrove - sostiene Carl Graumann - ad un certo "allontanamento dallo studio dei problemi sociali.
