La nascita dell’aquilone sarebbe stata suggerita da un evento del tutto casuale: un contadino si trovava nei campi ad arare la terra quando un’improvvisa raffica di vento sollevò dalla sua testa il cappello che usava per ripararsi dal sole. Il contadino fu talmente rapido di riflessi da riuscire ad afferrare la cordicella del cappello impedendogli di volare via. Il cappello cominciò a svolazzare in alto, proprio come un aquilone. Il contadino, incantato e divertito dal fenomeno, lo mostrò agli abitanti del villaggio e ciò suggerì loro l’invenzione dell’aquilone.
